Austral, 2eme jour - Seconday on the Austral
1: L'austral vu depuis la cale / the Austral
seen from the "harbour" (it's really not a harbour!!!)
2: En face des falaises d'entrecastaux, au moment
du retour sur base, un petit spectacle pyrotechnique pour nos amis à terre avec
qui on était en, contact radio. / In front of the Entrecastaux cliffs, a
little show for our friends over there, just before leaving back to the
base
3,4: Retour sur base,hommage et remerciement au
commandant de l'Austral ainsi qu'a tout l'équipage pour l'accueil et pour nous
avoir permi de passer une journée aussi bonne! / Back at the base, a little
show (again) to thank the Austral captain, Michel and all his staff for the very
good welcome and the very nice day we spent with them
Dimanche matin, benji débarque dan sma chambr eet
demande: ca te dis d'aller a Entrecastaux? A pied c'est envion 7 à 8h de marche
(avec de la via ferrata etc...) sachant qu ela veille on avait fait une grosse
manipe au relais 710 (prochain post) et qu'on avait arrosé la réussite de cette
manipe, je n'étais pas tres en forme pour enchainer 8 h de marche. Mais quand
j'ai su que Michel le capitaine de l'Austral nous proposait de passer une partie
de la journée a bord pour aller jusqu'a Entrecastaux ou ils etaient en train de
relever des casiers, je n'ai pas hésité une seconde, j'ai sauté dans les habits,
enfilé les bottes et courru avaler quelque chose au skua (le resto-cantine) A 9h
on s'est retrouvé toute l'équipe de vats encore présentes sur base pour
embarquer sur le bateau. Arrivé a bord, aprés avoir salué le commandant, on a
pris la direction d'Entrecastaux par Pointe B et la pointe de la recherche.
arrivée la bas on a pris contact par radio avec l'équipe en manipe ornitho sur
place. On leur a donnée les dernieres nouvelles: ca faisait deja 4 jours qu'ils
avaient quitté la base. Puis apres la premiere livraison de langouste, direction
la chaine de conditionnement ou on a pu participer a l'emballage des queues de
langouste. Je sais pas combien de millier d'euro me sont passés entre les mains,
ni combien j'en ai avalé! Apres un superbe repas, et le petit digestif
(rhum-banane!) qui allait avec, on a pu encore emballé un peu avant de rentrer
sur base. Une journée de folie!! Un grand merci à tout l'équipage et tout
particulierement à Michel!
Sunday morning, Ne,jamin run into my room and
ask me "Do you want goo to Entrecastaux?" It's a 7 to 8 hours walk (with some
climbing...) Moreover we wa lk a lot (or ran??) the day before
(see next post coming soon!) and we celebrated a lot the success of this work
(sometimes, we also walk for the job!), i was not so motivate dfor a 8h walk!
But when he said that the Austral captain was inviting us to spend the day on
bord, to see the Entrecastaux cliffs, i did not hesitate a second! I dressed my
self, had a breakfast very quickly and at 9, we were all the Vats (the
volunteers) ready to go on bord! We took the direction of Entrecastaux via
Pointe de la Recherche, spoke with our friend other there and then
took part into the packaging of lobster tails. i don't know how many euros flew
through my hands that day or how many i eated but a lot! After a great meal and
a very good banana-rhum, we it was already time to leave again and go back to
the base. A wonderful day, thanks to all the staff and particularly Michel the
captain
Courier - Mail
Le Marion arrive dans une semaine et reviendra en avril, par contre l'Austral nous acheminera du courrier en Janvier. Donc si vous voulez m'écrire, n'hésitez pas (ça fait tellement plaisir! les colis sont les bienvenus aussi =P ) Si vous voulez une petite lettre ou carte postale avec de très jolies timbres et des tampons encore plus beau, envoyez moi votre adresse postale, car comme je suis un garçon très organisé, j'ai tout oublié en métropole!!! (notamment celle de l'hippy flat, dans le schiedamsweg...)
The Marion Dufresne is coming in one week and next time will be in April. Nevertheless, the Austral will bring us mail durin january, so if you want to send me a mail (or something bigger!) don't hesitate, it's so pleasant to get fresh news and stuff from the real word!. In the same time, if you want to get a wonderful postcard, with nice stamps etc... just tell me and give me your adress. I forget to take it before leaving (i would be more than happy to have the one of the hippy flat in schiedamsweg, VL!!)

Premiere balade - Walk on the island
La première manipe loisir sur l'ile: depart au
petit matin de la base avec pour objectif d'arriver au Pignon un peu avant midi
heure a laquelle l'équipe rentrant d'Entrecastaux est censée arriver. Une très
bonne marche dans des conditions amsterdamienne: pluie, brouillard et vent mais
que du bonheur surtout quand on a eu une éclaircie!
Au final, on a bien reçu nos manipeurs avec un
casse croute et du chocolat, idéal pour se réchauffer. On était 14 au Pignon,
soit presque la moitié de l'effectif de la base (mais on ne se sent pas seul
pour autant!)
First walk for pleasure on the island: we left
in the morning to reach the Pignon before lunch where we meet the team of
Entrecastaux coming back after one week of work on birds. It was a surprise and
they 've been very pleased with the food and drinks we brought. Weather
conditions normal for Amsterdam: rain, wind and cloud! but so
nice!!!
We were 14 at the Pignon, around the half of
the people leaving on the island at the moment (but we never feel
lonely!!)
Premier mois - first month
1: Une carte d'Amsterdam, comme ca quand je parle
de Pointe B, d'Entrecastaux, de la Dive ou du Pignon, vous pourez
localiser ca! / A map of Amsterdam, so when i am speaking of Entrecastaux,
Del cano, Pointe B or somewhere else, you can locatate it!
2: Instructions sécurité en cas d'incendie: qui
veut devenir pompier? / Fire safety instruction: who wanna be a
firemen?
3: L'equipe de Pointe B: Adrien (CO2) José (soufre
partant) Severine et moi (la nouvelle équipe Soufre) et Seb (soufre partant). /
The Pointe B team: Adrien (CO2), José (sulfur leaving) Severine and me (the
new sulfur team) and Seb (sulfur leaving too!)
4: on a eu la visite d'un bateau de la Marine
Nationale: l'Albatros, en mission de traque de pirates et braconniers dans les
zones de peches francaises. 4 veinards ont pu monter a bord! / We've been
visited by the Albatros, a boat of the french national navy, chasing pirates in
the fishing areas. 4 lucky guys were allowed to go on bord!
5: Un apres midi, branle bas de combat a Géophy, on
voit passer au loin un voilier. A t'on de la visite? finalement non, le bateau
poursuivra sa route. / One afternoon, we saw this boat on the horizon: do we
have visit? Unfortunately this boat did not stop...
6: Apres une DURE journée de travail, petit apéro
devant Geophy (notre batiment de travail, pour les geophysiciens!) avec
nos amis marins! / After a hard day work, having a drink in frony of our
building called Geophy (because we are geo physician!)
Très vite on a eu l'occaz de partir à la découverte
de notre île, que ça soit des manipes loisirs ou pour le boulot. L'Austral, le
bateau qui pêche la langouste est resté environ 3 semaines autour d'Ams et j'ai
déjà eu l'occaz d'y monter deux fois dessus. Michel, le commandant, nous a fait
un accueil génial et Yanis nous a montré toute la chaîne de conditionnement des
langouste. A ça s'ajoute les différentes formations qu'on a eu: médicale,
sécurité, tondeuse… et prochainement le bloc opératoire! Plus le boulot normal
en routine, pas le temps de s'ennuyer!
Very quickly i had the opportunity to
discover the island, for the work or just for fun! The lobster fishing boat
Austral stayed 3 weeks after my arrival around Amsterdam and i had twice the
opportunity to visit it. Michel, the captain, welcome us more than very well and
yanis showed us how lobster are packaged. In the same time I had many different
formations: safety, medical emergency, how to cut grass... and soon surgery! On
top of it, there is also the daily work: no time to get
bored!
