Retour aux Tourbières / Back to the Tourbières

Trois mois depuis mon dernier passage sur le Plateau des Tourbières. La dernière fois, on recherchait les nids d'albatros d'Amsterdam avec des œufs. Depuis Cécile y était retournée pour suivre les naissance. Sur les 28 œufs pondu au départ, il restait plus que 24 poussins ou œufs il y a un mois. Et lors de notre sortie, il ne restait plus que 17 poussins et un œuf en éclosion. Bien qu'en pleine hiver, on a eu une très belle fenêtre météo: pas une goutte de pluie et même le soleil au rendez-vous toute la journée!

I went to the Plateau des Tourbières already 3 months ago! Last time we were looking for the nest of Amsterdam albatross with eggs. Cécile went there many times to check the birth. We found 28 eggs 3 months ago. Last month there was 24 chicks or eggs still alive. This time we found 17 chicks and one egg in hatching. Although it's winter, we had a wonderfull weather: no rain and lot of sun!

L'éclosion peut durer plusieurs jours. Bien qu'encore dans l'œuf, le poussin piaillait pour appeler ses parents.
The hatching can last few days. Still in the egg but already cheeping to call the parents.

Pendant un mois, les parents vont se relayer pour le nourrir et le protéger du froid et des prédateurs.
During one month, parent will take over from the over to feed the chick and protect him from the cold and predators.

Quand le poussin devient trop gros (agé de 3 semaines, un mois), le parent reste a proximité du nid jusqu'à ce qu'il soit capable de se défendre des prédateurs.
When the chick is too big (3 weeks to 1 month old), one parent stay close until the chick can protect himself from predators.

Devenu suffisamment grand, les deux parents vont aller en mer en quête de nourriture. La demande du poussin a elle aussi augmenté!
Being big enough, both parents fly to the sea looking for food. Indeed the chick need more food!!

Un couple réuni autour du poussin. Il est difficile de déterminer le sexe d'un oiseau isolé mais en couple, le plus clair (a droite) est le mâle et le plus sombre (a gauche) est la femelle.
Par contre même si le poussin est très très clair.... on ne peut pas encore dire !!!

On the other hand, even if the chick is really very light... we can not determinate the sex!

Un couple non reproducteur (adolescents) qui s'entraine à parader. La plupart sont cependant en mer a cette époque et on a pas vu beaucoup d'oiseau non reproducteur lors de cette sortie.

A non reproductor couple (young) parading. However, the major part of the non reproductor birds are at this season on sea and we did not see a lot of them.

Les oiseaux sont bagués systématiquement depuis 1983 où l'espèce a été découverte (auparavant les spécialistes croyaient que c'était une espèce locale de grand albatros). Cependant chaque année, les ornitho trouvent encore un ou deux oiseaux pas bagués, en général des poussins qui n'ont pas été trouvé a leur naissance! Cecile essaye de se saisir de cette jeune femelle.

Birds get a ring systematically since 1983 when the species was discovered. Before specialist thought these birds were a local species of Giant albatross. Every year, the ornithologist still find not equipped birds. Generally they are not found chicks at their birth. Cecile is trying to catch it.

Aprés 10 minutes de pousuites a 4 pattes, elle finit par l'attrapper sans que l'oiseau ne s'envol!
After 10 minutes of pursuit, Cecile finally caught it without the bird trying to escape!

J'ai eu la chance de le tenir pendant qu'elle effectuait les différentes mesures:  longueur du bec et du crochet, longueur des pattes, longueur des ailes. Puis il y a la mise en place de deux bagues: une métallique lui donnant un numéro d'identification international et l'autre possédant un numéro visible de loin pour l'identification de l'oiseau.
Cet oiseau fait 6,4kg et a des ailes de 130cm soit presque 3m d'envergure! A la couleur (et en comparaison de celle de son partenaire) c'est une femelle. Etant non reproductrice et au vu de ses mensurations, elle doit être âgée d'environ 6 ans!

I had the chance of holding the bird during the time she took all the measurements: beak, leg and wing. Then she put two rings: a metallic one with an international identification number and the other with a big-written number to identify the bird from 10m.
This bird weighs 6.4kg, its wing measures 130cm so a wingspan of almost 3m!! According to its colour (and the colour of the partner)   it's a female. Since she is a non reproductor bird and according to it's size and weight she is around 6 years old.

Une superbe manipe grace a Cécile avec Alain et Gabi,  un temps magnifique (je comprends pourquoi ceux de Crozet et Kerguelen sont jaloux de notre météo, mais ce n'est pas souvent comme ça quand même!) et des oiseaux grandioses!!!
A wonderful walk thanks to Cecile, with Alain and Gabi, a very nice weather (I now understand why people from Crozet or Kerguelen are jealous of our weather, but it's not that often like this!) and beautiful birds!!
