La cabane BMG se trouve a environ 40min à pied en direction du bois de phylicas. Pas tres grande, mais trés charmante de part son emplacement: AU sommet d'une falaise et entouré de phylicas.

BMG refuge is 40min far from the base, in direction of the Phylica wood. it's not a large refuge, but very charming due to its situation: on top of the cliff with Phylica all around

Les beaux jours revenant, la temperature de l'eau remontant, il est de plus en plus facile d'organiser une petite baignade et je ne m'en lasse pas!!!
Nice weather is almost back, water temperature increases, so it's getting easier to swimm and i never have enough of it!

Objectif pour moi de la baignade, voir ce que font les poisson de mon hameçon quand je pêche (comme ca j'attraperai peut etre plus de poisson!)

Il semblerait qu'ils preferent jouer avec l'apat ou pire avec le lest plutot que d'attraper l'hamecon!!!

Finalement, un gobi c'est decidé a l'attrapper! Mais vu comme il etait petit, je l'ai relaché!

2eme objectif: la capture de langouste. Il y en avait pas mal de sortie ce jour là, mais c'est pas facile de les attraper a la main, elles sont quand même plus agiles que nous sous l'eau!
2nd aim: catching a lobster. they were quite a lot out that day, but they are really more agile than us under water, so it's not so easy!

Voici 2 petites vidéo sur le transit pour Entrecasteaux: un aller plutôt venteux au moment de traverser la Caldeira (c'est vrai qu'on en a bavé et ca se voit!!) et un retour agréable, pic-nic avec vue sur la Caldeira, juste avant d'avoir ma première averse de neige ici!

Voici quelques video tournées a Entrecasteaux pendant la manipe!! La qualité est ce qu'elle est, mais c'est deja une prouesse technologique!!! Dire qu'il y a 10ans, les hivernant pouvait seulement échanger quelques rares telex hebdomadaires avec leur famille!!!

Avec quelques jour d'avance, Adrien a soufflé une bougie d'anniversaire!
Adrien celebrated few days in advance his birthday!

Un albatros a becs jaune: les populations d'oiseaux sont de retour a Entrecasteaux où la parade et la formation des couples a commencé!!
A yellow nosed Albatross: birds are back in Entrecasteaux starting to parading and meeting partners.

Un séjour dans des conditions tellement extremes qu'on a même un jour sortie la table pour manger dehors!!! Par contre avec le vent, les verres ne tenaient pas sur la table!
We had such a bad weather, we were foced to eat outside!!! But due to the wind, glasses did not stayed on the table!

Apres un apres midi de comptage, on s'est retrouvé autour d'un chocolat chaud fait maison, avec du bon chocolat Nestlé dessert. Merci MC!
After counting birds all the afternoon long, we enjoyed a real hot chocolate, made from real dessert chocolate! Thanks MC!

Lors du trajet de retour, on a eu une meteo bien plus clémente!!! Mickael en a profité pour decouvrir un paysage qu'il n'avait pas eu la chance d'admirer à l'aller. Une fois n'est pas coutume, on a mangé sur les contreforts de la Caldeira en admirant le paysage. Pour l'anecdote: une petite averse de neige est passée pendant notre dégustation de sardine et rilletes en boite!

On the way back, the weather was really nicer!! Mickael finally discovered the wonderful landscape of our island. We eated, unusually, next to the Caldeira, admiring the beautiful view. Just for fun: during our meal, snow started to fall. First time i "touched" snow here!

A croire que l'ornithote a un complexe d'autorité a compenser???? Bravo en tout cas a la chef de manipe pour cette super expedition!

Manipe Gorfous a Entrecasteaux

Première manipe de l'ère de la 61eme: c'est non sans difficultés que Cécile a pu trouver des manipeurs pour l'accompagner a Entrecasteaux, alors forcement, y'en a qui ont su sauter sur l'occasion!! Nous voila parti pour 7 jours (et oui, tout ca, si c'est pas la classe!!!) à Entrecasteaux. Au départ la météo nous annonce pas de pluie mais un peu de vent, alors nous voila (Cécile, Adrien, Mickael le nouveau chef Centrale et moi) super motivés pour gagner l'autre coté de l'île!!

First hike with the 61th mission: Cecile had some difficulties to find people to come with her to Entrecasteaux, so i took the opportunity to go there again! The stay lasted 7 days (one week of evasion!) The weather forecast was good: no rain and a little bit windy. So we (cécile, adrien, Mickael, the new guy in charge of the power plant and me) were super motivated to reach the other side of the island

Au final, les prévisions météo étaient un peu dans les choux et on s'est retrouvé au milieu de l'île a en baver contre des vents de face...

Finally, the weather forecast was wrong and walk on the top of the island with strong wind in the face...

Arrivé sur les caillebotis, le vent ne nous permet pas de nous tenir debout et une bonne partie du trajet se fait en rampant ou sur les fesses, mais pour sa première sortie, Mickael ne s'est pas démonté et a trouvé ca génial (presque) jusqu'au bout!!

After the half of the trip, we can't stay on our feet because of the wind and we did this part of the trip by crawling. But for its first hike, Mickael find it great anyway!!!

Enfin quand même, comme peuvent en témoigner les images, on en a vraiment bavé. On a mis 9h30 pour rejoindre la cabane d'Entrecasteaux soit 2h30 de plus qu'un transit tranquille! Heureusement ce jour là, j'ai eu la bonne idée d'emmener ma thermos pleine de thé chaud, c'était parfait pour se requinquer!

As you can see on the pictures, it was really a hard hike! We needed 9h30 to, reach the refuge instead of 7h for a normal hike! This day, before leaving i had the good idea to bring some warm tea, very pleasant when we started to get cold!

Enfin, en fin d'aprés midi, alors que nous n'étions plus sous les vents dominants, on a vu se profiler au loin la cabane au pied de la Cathédrale, synonyme d'un bon repos bien mérité!!!

In the end of the afternoon, in a less windy area, we saw appearing the refuge, at the foot of the Cathédrale, meaning for us the end of the ordeal!!!

Le but de cette semaine de manipe était le comptage des gorfous. 3 apres midi sur la plage pour compter tous les oiseaux (et oui, pour ceux qui en doutaient, c'est petits animaux a plume qui pondent des œufs sont des oiseaux!!!) qui reviennent du large. Il y a aussi 2 colonie d'étude où il fallait allait denombrer le nombre de gorfous sur nid et le nombre d'oiseau itinérant. 5 jours au contact de ses animaux pleins de charmes et tres agiles dans les rochers, bien que parfois un peu malhabile!

A part quelques photos qui m'appartiennent, la plupart sont celles d'Adrien!!!

The aim of this stay was to count the rock-hooper penguins. 3 afternoons on the beach to count all the birds coming from the sea (yes, they make eggs and have feather, so they are birds!) They are also 2 colonies of study where we counted the number of penguins on nest and the number of walking penguins. 5 days in contact with these very charming birds, very agile for climbing but sometimes clumsy!!

Except few pictures of mine, Adrien took major part of the pictures here.

Les gorfous pondent 2 œufs. Les deux peuvent arriver a terme si les parents se relaient bien pour couver pendant que l'autre va se nourrir en mer et qu'un skua ne viennent pas les déloger pour voler les oeufs. Cependant seul le 2eme poussin à éclore sera élevé par les parents qui ne peuvent prendre en charge qu'un seul poussin.

Rock-hooper penguins make 2 eggs. Both can give a chick if parents do well their job (nesting and protecting it against skua attacks). However, only the 2nd born chick will be grown up by the parents who can take care only of one.

On peut voir au dessus les deux parents ainsi qu'un poussin. En fait dans ce nid, il y avait deux poussin (pour le moment) comme on peut le voir sur la photo en dessous.

You can see above the two parents and a chick. Actually, they were in this nest (for the moment) two chicks as you can see below

Très vite, le poussin va réclamer au parent présent de la nourriture en piaillant et en tapant son bec contre celui de l'adulte qui si il l'accepte va régurgiter de la nourriture prédigérée pour le petit.

The chick will very soon ask for food by cheeping and chocking is beak against the one of the present parent which will regurgitate predigested food if it accept to.

Cet hiver Cécile aidée de Steeve, Lionel, Alain et Papi a repeint le "Love Hotel" lieu de stockage de l'essence du groupe électrogène et des bouteilles de gaz. Et par la même occasion elle a baptisé la douche "Love Shower" Admirez le travail d'artiste!

This winter, Cecile helped by Alain, Steeve, Lionel and Philippe painted the "Love Hotel" where are stocked petrol for the motors and the gas for the heating. In the same time she christened the shower "Love shower". Admire the painting!

L'arrivée sur la plage des gorfous est quelque chose d'assez impressionnant: il y a toujours a Entrecasteaux de bonnes vagues. De vagues en vagues, ils se rapprochent du bord jusqu'à se faire projeter dans les rochers.. Même si certains se blessent, une très grande majorité en sort indemne alors qu'a leur place j'aurai quelques cotes cassés, un trauma crânien, et surement un clavicule HS!

Rock-hooper penguins reaching the beach is very impressive: they are always big waves in Entrecasteaux. Waves after waves they come closer to the beach until the wave that will send them against the rocks. Where you or me would be almost dead, they come with no injuries even if sometimes one of them might be hurt.

OP2

L'OP2 est une des OP les plus importantes au cours d'un hivernage. Elle marque pour beaucoup la fin de leur mission ici et pour d'autres le début de la leur. Pour certains comme les VCAT ou le medecin, elle marque une grosse période de transition. Derniers moments partagés avec la mission 60, dans le rush d'une OP, ou chacun doit en plus faire une passation de consigne a son successeur!

Cette année, l'OP aura été en plus réduite d'un jour ce qui a encore plus accéléré le temps!!! La 61eme mission d'Amsterdam est arrivée très motivée et la 60ème est repartie sur le Marion.

The 2nd OP of the year is one of the most important during a stay here. For the major part it means the end of their mission here and for others the start of it. For me, the other young people and Helene this is a great time of transition. Last time shared with friends of the 60th mission as the same time of all the job of an OP.
Moreover, this year, the OP was shortened of one day!!! The 61th arrived very motived and the 60th left on the Marion Dufresne

Comme d'habitude, on a mis le paquet pour accueillir tout le monde, surtout les prochains hivernants!

A cause de la météo, tout le débarquement de matériel s'est fait a cette OP par hélico et rien par la portière. Du coup, les créneau de playmobile sur la DZ était assez chargé!

Due to the weather, material arrived only by helicopter and nothing with the little boat. In this way, being a playmobile on the DropZone was very hard this time!

Déjà la fin de l'OP et le départ du Marion qui reviendra dans 12 semaines avec à son bord nos remplaçants!

The Marion Dufresne already leaving but coming soon back in 12 weeks with the next Volunteer team!

Dès le Marion parti, on se retrouve a nouveau seul, dans le calme habituel de notre île. Sauf que cette fois, chose très perturbante, les visages habituels ne sont plus là et la première impression est que le Marion aurait oublié des gens sur Amsterdam. Maintenant que l'OP est passé et que les gens ne courent plus dans tous les sens, on prend plus le temps de faire connaissance, d'expliquer le fonctionnement de la base (repas, corvées etc...)
14 nouveaux sont arrivés et nous sommes finalement que 6 anciens à être restés. De ce fait c'est a nous de nous intégrer a leur groupe et non l'inverse. Ce qui est d'autant plus marquant qu'on a un peu l'impression d'être chez nous normalement mais la, c'est comme si on gardait le même décor mais que le scénario avait changé!! "Attention, vous venez d'entrer dans une autre dimension!!!" Heureusement rien n'a changé à géophy (nos bureaux) et ca reste un on repère pour nous!

As soon as the Marion left, we were finally alone again, getting back our usual way of life. But this time, the very disturbing point is that the familiar faces are no more here and first thought is that the Marion Dufresne may have forget some people here! Now the OP is behind, we are not running everywhere so we take the time to know each other, to explain how life is here (meal, common task, cleaning...)
14 new arriving people and only 6 "old" staying. In this way, it's our task to integrate their group even if it should be in the other way! What is also disturbing is that normally we felt like at home here but now, it's like the landscape would be the same but the caracters change. " Warning, you just entered a new dimension!!" Of course, everything stayed the same in Geophy (our work-building) so it's like our refuge!

Comme je l'ai deja montré, il existe sur Ams ou dans les autres districts, des panneaux directionnels qui pointent vers la metropole, une maniere de laisser une trace de son passage et aussi de penser a chez soi!
A trois grenoblois, on ne pouvait pas ne pas en mettre une!!!

As i showed it before, in each district they are such signs, pointing to our home in France. A way to leave a mark and to think to its home.
Since we are 3 from Grenoble, we had to leave our mark!

Soirée des partant / Farewell party

Il y a une tradition sur Amsterdam, à la veille d'une OP, c'est l'organisation par les "restants" d'une "soirée des partants". On a donc a 6 restants organisés une dernière soirée, tous ensemble avant l'arrivée du Marion pour les 14 partants. Le thème: "retour dans l'antiquité". Pour garder la surprise jusqu'au bout, on s'est retrouvé la veille de la soirée a 23h au Skua pour mettre en place toute la déco préparé en cachette dans la journée. Comme ça, à leur réveil les partants ont eu une bonne surprise!

There is a tradition on Amsterdam, before the Marion come it's the farewell party organised by the people staying (we are 6) for the leaving people (14). The theme of the party was "back to Antic". To keep the theme secret until the last time we met the day before at 23h in the skua to decorate the room prepared during the day. The next morning, when they arrived, they were all surprised.
